Hook sizes may range from 2 to 2/0.īig fireball rigs are for jumbo tailor and boast large 7/0 hooks, a big float and nylon coated wire trace for a leader. They are set up in a high / low paternoster fashion, with a clip for the sinker at the bottom of the rig and may have a monofilament or wire hook length. They are deadly for choppers in the 500g to 2 kilo range. ![]() Two-hook fireballs are tipped with small strips or chunks of cut fish and primarily used for small tailor. These rigs are known by a variety of different names such as doodlebugs, bait bugs, and fireballs. Even if a rig is fished with dead bait on the bottom, a small, brightly painted cork or Styrofoam float that rides directly in front of the hook will provide this movement and attractive colour. It has been discovered in the States that the most effective tailor rigs have two things in common: bright colours and movement. Alternatively a gang could be substituted for the single hook and a mulie used as bait. It also removes the chance of a scale obscuring the hook point and preventing a hook-up. I scale the herring prior to filleting as it makes it easier to get the hook through the baits. This rig is usually fished with pieces of fresh fish, called “cut bait.” I’d recommend using herring fillets as these are generally easily obtained and last well on the hook. Note the Shiner style hooks they use for this 2 hook rig. Single hook Fireball rigs are baited with strips ofįish and have proven deadly for big tailor in the US.
